Discovering: Riga

Arriving in Riga, Latvia

So for our winter weekend away, we decided to head to Riga, the capital of Latvia for 3 nights. Cheap flights were what initially drew us in, but actually, it actually holds its own and is a beautiful, northern European city.

We stayed in the Old Town in Wellton Centrum which was gorgeous, perfectly located plus came with a bonus spa! Over the course of the next 3 days we did a lot of wandering. The old town is small but there are some stunning buildings that are all worth exploring.

We read up quite extensively, for things to do as winter breaks are always risky with the weather. It ended up being freezing but sunny so perfect for being outside.

The highlights of the trip included watching the sunset at the top of the Radisson Hotel, not usually our sort of place but the views were spectacular. However, be aware that the drinks aren’t cheap.

We also were advised to visit the KGB exhibition which is a short walk from the old town. It is a must do whilst in Riga!! The museum is based in the old KGB offices and cells, the guides speak incredible English and have their own personal stories which really drive home how terrifying the occupation must have been for the Latvian people.

Another high point was the E.A.T Riga tour we did, with this you get your own personal tour guide who takes you round on which ever tour you fancy. We did the night time Riga tour which gave a different perspective to the city. It also, included a few bars to sample some interesting, national beers. There is one that takes you around the food market which is housed in 5 old airplane hangers, definitely worth a visit with or without the tour.

Finally, a must visit is the bar/restaurant: Folkklubs Ala Pagrabs. Order yourself a beer teamed with their famous beer platters (a mound of cheeses, meats, garlic bread and vegetables) then sit back and listen to some live Latvian folk music, it’s brilliant!
