How High Is Blencathra?
Blencathra is 868m above sea level, making it the 14th tallest peak in the Lake District and 18th tallest in England. Blencathra is unique because it has 6 different fell tops, with the highest being Hallsfell Top (868m). Formally known as ‘Saddleback’ due to the mountains shape, Blencathra is one of the most northerly hills in the Lake District and is situated east of Keswick, making it part of the Northern fells group. The closest village to the peak is Threlkeld which lies in the shadow of the mountain.
How Long To Climb Blencathra via Sharp Edge?
The most popular route, Sharp Edge attracts those looking for a walk with the thrill of a grade 1 scramble. Starting and ending in Scales, the route is 7 miles long (11.5km) and on average takes 4 hours to complete. Despite being a grade 1 scramble, Shap Edge can still be difficult to manoeuvre so it is recommended to attempt Sharp Edge in summer conditions to reduce the difficulty and be prepared to cancel your scramble up Sharp Edge if the weather conditions are poor. Where To Park To Walk Up Blencathra
Throughout Scales (The start of the route), there is plenty of free parking available. However the best car park is a small car park next to the White Horse. Unfortunately the car park does not have a an address, but if you enter The White Horse (CA12 4SY) into your sat nav you should be able to find the car park next to the pub.
What To Wear To Walk Up Blencathra
Even if you’re climbing in the Spring and Summer months, it can still get very windy and cold at the peak of the mountain. It is recommended that you bring a waterproof jacket in a rucksack as the temperature can drop as you venture further up the mountain. Due to it being a steep and challenging walk it is always recommended to bring a water bottle to keep hydrated.
On this walk it is ESSENTIAL you wear the correct footwear due to the scramble on Sharp Edge. Wearing incorrect footwear can be dangerous as you can injure yourself or slip. Despite being a Grade 1 scramble, people have still gotten inured and there have been 11 fatalities since 1947.
