How to get to the Galapagos Islands

When starting to organise your adventure, you might be wondering how to get to the Galapagos Islands. As a national park, isolated 600 miles away from the coast of South America, there are certain restrictions for incoming flights. If you’re looking to get a flight, the majority of people flying to Galapagos depart from Ecuador, in Guayaquil or Quito. When flying from England, the travel time takes approximately 16 hours with at least one stopover in Madrid or Bogota.
Alternatively, you can take the boat from Ecuador to the islands in approximately 3 – 4 days. However, if you suffer from sea sickness, it might not be the best option for you as it can be quite choppy!

Go snorkelling. With an abundance of snorkelling hotspots, head to the waters and swim alongside sea lions, manta rays and even some species of sharks. Just make sure you contact a safety expert to go with you.

When is the best time to visit the Galapagos Islands?

When planning your trip to the Galapagos Islands, it’s important to consider the time of year that you’re going. At the beginning of the year, the weather brings both sunshine and rain. If you’re hoping for hot weather and plenty of trips to the beach, your best bet is to plan your trip during the spring. Things start to cool down from July to November, so you may need to bring a waterproof jacket with you in these months.

What to take to the Galapagos Islands

With a selection of small shops on the islands, you’ll be able to pick up some basic supplies – just be aware the prices will be high so it’s best to bring your own. Some of the key items to take when visiting the Galapagos Islands include:

Clothing. Make sure to take a pair of outdoor shorts, sturdy walking shoes, lightweight t‐shirts, a sun‐hat, and waterproof outers. For added protection, view our range of sun‐protective clothing so you can enjoy your adventure without discomfort from sunburn.
Toiletries. As mentioned previously, there aren’t many places to buy toiletries out on the island. Pack the regular personal hygiene products like body wash, deodorant, shampoo and conditioner, but also a high SPF natural sun cream, insect repellent and sea sickness tablets.
Extras. If you’re planning on taking part in some exciting activities like snorkelling, it may be worth taking your own kit (if you have it) as it could help you to save some money. Another key thing to remember is currency! So be sure to get some US dollars ahead of your trip.

What you won’t need when visiting the Galapagos Islands

Now you know what to take to the Galapagos Islands, it’s important to remember the things you shouldn’t bring. In order to protect the island and its various species, you cannot bring any kind of fruit, vegetable or plant with you. In addition to this, make sure you thoroughly wash the soles of your shoes or anything that could hold any threats to the environment.

Having read our Galapagos Islands travel guide, we hope you’re feeling excited and prepared for your adventure. Make sure you’ve got all the gear you need for your trip with our range of outdoor clothing.
