Meet Josh from the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund

Ever wondered what it would be like to hang out with gorillas, and still call this your job?

Josh Clark, Senior Digital Marketing and Communications Coordinator at the Fossey Fund, recently had the opportunity to travel to Rwanda to witness first-hand the incredible work his colleagues do every single day. Luckily for us, he wanted to share his life-changing experience.

The Kindness Of Strangers

Arriving in Rwanda, I was immediately struck by the kindness shown towards me from the Rwandan people. After a delayed flight, I struggled to get a ride to my hotel but someone recognised the Fossey Fund logo on my jacket and they asked if I was lost. They helped me call the hotel, get a new ride and it was so amazing to see how respected the Fossey Fund is. And it didn’t stop there. Many people went out of their way to make me feel at home – and I have new friends who I can exchange emails with, helping them with their English and them helping me with my Kinyarwanda.

And What About The Gorillas?

They did not disappoint! Visiting the gorillas was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Their family and group dynamics, which I had heard so much about, working at the Fossey Fund, were amazing to see in person. From the mother gorilla who was so carefully holding her fragile 12-day old infant while resting, to the three juvenile gorillas playing in a tree above her or the giant silverback appearing out of nowhere. I couldn’t believe just how majestic they are.

Where It All Began

I have never felt more connected to our mission and work than I did the day that I hiked to see Dian’s grave. While visiting her final resting place, located directly next to her precious gorilla Digit, I was reminded that this fearless woman gave her life to save gorillas. 55 years later, the Fossey Fund team work tirelessly to continue her legacy.

I only hope that I can do my part to continue Dian’s lasting and impactful legacy for the next 55 years. I hope my story demonstrates just how powerful our work is in Rwanda – both for gorillas and the people of Rwanda.

Saving Gorillas. Helping People.

Help Ensure Dian’s Legacy Carries On

The 24th September is World Gorilla Day and we will celebrate our 55th anniversary too. Please consider making a donation to the Fossey Fund so that together we can continue to protect gorillas and support the people who share their forest home.
