Introducing The Conservation Collective

Conservation is at the heart of our sustainability ethos. We support many charities including Galapagos Conservation Trust and Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. We are particularly keen to work with the people on the ground – the ones who make things happen.

This is why we have partnered with The Conservation Collective. They build and support foundations supporting local grass roots conservation work, across the world, to protect and restore nature on land and at sea. They work towards the following environmental impacts: helping native species to thrive; preserving, protecting and regenerating natural habitats, slowing down and adapting to climate change, and reducing pollution.

We will be championing 2 projects in Mallorca with the Mallorca Preservation Foundation.

The Stellaris Project has been set up with Palma Aquarium. Sharks help maintain the balance of the ocean ecosystems, we have learnt this through our work with GCT, but their survival is threatened by overfishing, bycatch, and the overall effects of climate change. This project aims to breed endangered nursehound sharks in captivity and release them back into the wild, once they are mature and ready to produce a viable population. The Mallorca Preservation Foundation will also be focusing on education and raising awareness of the vulnerability of sharks.

Why should we be concerned?

The on-going collapse of native fish stocks, due to unsustainable fishing practices, threatens the survival of all marine life.

In conjunction with WWF, Mallorca Preservation Foundation is supporting the restoration of the wetlands of Alcudia bay. Wetlands are a hotspot for biodiversity. They play a key role when it comes to food security and climate change mitigation. Issues such as intensive agriculture, water pollution, and severe droughts threaten the viability of these ecosystems. This project aims to restore the degraded wetlands of Alcudia bay, providing an appropriate breeding habitat to bird populations and also offering educational content on this.

Why is this important?

Ecosystem restoration has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by 2.9 Gt per year, compared to 0.8 Gt per year from the electrification of vehicles.

Over the coming months we will be delving deeper into each of the projects, meeting the teams on the ground, finding out what their roles are and what motivates them.
