Manchester’s Finest x Craghoppers Weekend Walks 6: Victoria Jane / Pendle Hill & Aitken Wood

During the spooky season it’s normal practice for people to carve pumpkins, scoff chocolate or dress up in your best costume and head to a Halloween party… We had something else in mind.

We took one of the city’s most renown and celebrated soul artists and BBC broadcaster Victoria Jane deep into East Lancashire to the infamous and historically gruesome Pendle Hill & Aitken Wood.

The perfect way to spend Halloween right?

The History

Pendle Hill is the home of the 1612 trial of the Pendle witches, arguably the most famous witch trials in English history. The 12 people accused of witchcraft all lived in Pendle Hill and the surrounding areas. 10 of the accused were sentenced to hanging at Lancaster castle. It is one of the most haunted locations in Britain, and many walk up Pendle Hill and feel like someone is watching them from the trees at all times.

 The Route

From steep climbs, to bone chilling empty farmlands, the route doesn’t only test your leg muscles but your bravery as well. The route varies from splendid views upon the top of Pendle Hill to daunting thick forests to truly make you feel small.

With a 557m ascent to begin the route and a number of creepy sculptures and artwork to finish the circular walk, this hike was the perfect activity to spend Halloween.

The closest thing you’ll get to Blair Witch, you watch this episode of Manchester Finest’s Weekend Walks, tonight at 7pm on Youtube. In the meantime you can watch the other episodes of the series HERE
