The Craghoppers Film Prize 2020 Winners

It has been as challenging year for us all and our festivals were put on hold but we went ahead and awarded our student winners with £1,000 each from the March 2020 entries. We also celebrated with a Virtual Festival on 14 October 2020.

So here are our student winners for 2020:

The Lost Scot
Julien Cornwall
Winning the Craghoppers’ Student Award is the best news I’ve received so far during lockdown! The other was hearing that cinemas were being re-opened in time for Nolans new film Tenet, before Warner Brothers decided to pull it’s release… so please don’t take this away from me. I am truly humbled to have been given this award and I can’t wait to share the news with my amazing cast and crew who helped me bring my script to life! The film wouldn’t be as humorous and stunning without their performance. This award is recognition of their amazing work.
To win the Craghoppers Student award is immense and such an honour. My goal was to make a sarcastic British short film to entertain the audience and make them laugh. I’d never done comedy before as drama and thrillers were my go to genre. I feel like I have overachieved now, as I would have never expected winning this award. It has just given me more motivation to continue writing comedy!

Garden Party
Victor Caire
It all started at animation school, with 6 students sharing their passion for realistic images and animal wildlife. Animals are great characters to tell a story. Their primal behaviour makes them fascinating. It’s easy for the viewer to connect with, to understand their goals. We wanted to use their power of attraction to trick the audience, to turn the film into something unexpected. Another layer in the narration, hidden behind those insignificant little frog's stories.
This is how Garden Party came out, a crossover between BBC wildlife and Alfred Hitchcock movies.
Students first care about making a piece they can be proud of. Winning this prize shows how people appreciate the short. It gives us such happiness and pushes us to keep making films with our heart.

We are now planning the 2021 Festival series so watch this space
