Craghoppers

Alice Aedy Edit

I’m a documentary photographer and film-maker focused on social justice and environmental issues. For years I travelled extensively for both work and pleasure, with little thought of my carbon footprint. When it comes to my climate, I am far from perfect. None of us are. But now more than ever I am passionate about making better choices, in buying from brands that make it possible to live in line with my values. Brands showing a genuine commitment to a better future for both people and planet.

Sometimes it’s easy to feel powerless in the face of the environmental and social justice challenges so poignant today. What if our consumer choices could make a positive impact on the world?

It’s no longer a secret that the fashion industry’s carbon footprint is bigger than the carbon industry's. I am learning the dangers of fast fashion.I want to know who made my clothes and how they were impacted - and paid - in the process. I expect transparency and sustainability. It’s not just me - young consumers are more conscious than any generation before of a brand’s origins, carbon footprint and the consequences of what they buy and wear. A 2016 survey done in the UK found that when choosing among retailers, more than half of young consumers find ethical credentials somewhat or very important. It feels as though a kind of consumer revolution is underway, towards ethical and sustainable consumption.

In just one year, Craghoppers have made impressive leaps forward in terms of their product sustainability, with 70% of Craghoppers products using recycled materials this Winter, compared to 12% last year.

Bold steps forward like these give me hope; progress is possible. It is truly possible to buy from brands and live in line with your values. But every one of us has a role to play in shaping this industry; we must keep demanding more from brands, insist on responsible sourcing, and re-define sustainable consumption to include brands working towards a better world for both people and planet.

Every step of progress matters.

Every degree matters.
