Meet Sabah. Physiotherapist by profession, but when she can, she spends her free time exploring the mountains with her young son and husband. As a mountain leader trainee, working towards a ML qualification, there is no stopping her! But as a lover of the outdoors herself, she noticed that only a tiny proportion of BME communities visit the outdoors.

“Research shows just 1% of the BME population visit our great national parks in the UK.”

Having noticed the lack of accessibility to hiking in her community, she decided to do something about it. Sabah and her husband founded Summit Special Adventures, a family- run mountaineering company, based in the UK, aiming to improve ethnic minorities’ access to the great outdoors, so they can fully enjoy the beautiful scenery on offer. Sabah also encourages mothers to get their own children from a young age to explore and gain the benefits of the outdoors.

She was also acutely aware of the lack of BME representation - especially from an Asian background – in the world of outdoor clothing brands. She struggled to find modest women’s clothing as there was either little choice or it was inferior to the men’s range.

“Craghoppers clothes are designed for women by women. I love its ethics and what it stands for and its focus on getting the right gear for women to get fit.”

We will be following Sabah own adventures and her quest to encourage more women from the BME community to explore the outdoors.
