The Arctic Tundra is one of the worlds harshest regions, with vast stretches of treeless landscapes and a permafrost subsoil.

Temperatures can average -34ºc to -6ºc, which means wildlife is scarce. Some animals that inhabit this climate are Arctic foxes, polar bears and grey wolves. As there are only two seasons here, summertime can experience 24 hours of sunlight, contrasting to 24 hours of pure darkness in the winter.

Winds can reach up to 100km per hour due to the open landscape and footings can vary. During the warmer months, the soil can become soggy due to the frost thawing, leading to the appearance of bogs, marshes and lakes.

Ambassador Focus:

Dr Louisa Preston

As an astrobiologist and geologist, Louisa studies some of the Earth’s most extreme environments and the life (human and microbe) that lives or once lived there. Her biggest adventure was doing fieldwork during an Icelandic winter. For these to be the most realistic representations of environments on other planets and moons they need to be cold, so Louisa braves temperatures of -20 degrees, ice rain, snow drifts and blinding volcanic dust storms. Louisa relies on Craghoppers clothing which is warm and waterproof.
