Levison Wood’s Expedition Essentials

What are Levison Wood’s expedition essentials?

Explorer Levison Wood walked the entire length of the Himalayas – from Afghanistan to Bhutan, equipped with a few cherished items that travelled with him along the way. We sat down with the seasoned explorer to find out how each of his possessions played a significant part in completing such an epic challenge.

A travel diary.

Lev’s journal which laid the foundations for his book, Walking the Himalayas.

‘This is actually my journal from the Himalayas. Here it is, 6 months worth of work that was the basis of my book. You can see it’s a bit dirty – during the car crash it actually got thrown out the window and I didn’t find it until two days later.’

Something sentimental.

Original 1920’s flag that Lev took along with him on his expedition, Walking the Himalayas

‘This is the flag that I took to the top of snow leopard mountain in Bhutan.  So this is the one I had on the last day at the end of my pretty epic journey. That’s actually an original flag from 1924 so it’s very special.’

Survival essentials.

An original Kukri knife.

‘This is called a kukri and this is what the Gurkha solders in Nepal use. I actually had to use it – my arm got infected when I was walking – the shirt that i was wearing was rubbing on my arm because the stitches were all still fresh. So one day I had to cut the arm of my Craghoppers shirt and this is what I used to do it!’
