How Do We Judge The Craghoppers Film Prize?

Somerset House, 17 August 2022

We often get asked how the Craghoppers Film Prize winners are chosen, and finally we thought we’d explain how the process works!

Now in its 4th year, the Awards attract over 3000 entries from across the globe. The films are all submitted via Film Freeway.

Now in its 4th year, the Discover Film Awards attract over 3000 entries from across the globe. The films are all submitted via Film Freeway – a globally recognised and dedicated platform for filmmakers to enter awards programmes. The Discover Film Awards sit on this platform along with others like The Sundance Festival and New York Film Festival.

Following an initial selection by our partners, discover.film, the rigorous judging rounds begin, before the list reaches the final judging day.

Hosted by discover. film, judging day takes place at Somerset House where approximately 20 judges, made up of actors, directors, producers, distributors, the media, as well as some of our partners attend.

Any film put forward for the Craghoppers Film Prize must have qualified and won a category in the Discover Film Awards. For films to get to this stage, they have to be exceptional. With previous winners including Goldfish, Tony and The Bull and Hush Little Baby, the standard is high, which is why there are always animated discussions around the judging table, to reach the final list of winners.

Awarding the Craghoppers Film Prize has allowed us the opportunity to acknowledge the amazing talent within the shortfilm community.  We offer the largest cash prizes in shortfilm and as an under-valued genre, we are providing these filmmakers with the support they need to continue their passion.

What Are The Categories?

This year’s Craghoppers Film Prize categories include Best UK Student, Best International, Student, Best Social Impact, Overall Winner and Runner up. And for 2022, reflecting an increase in entries of this type, we have included Best Documentary too.
